I always say that once Halloween rolls around, the rest of the year is a roller coaster with no brakes. Somehow, with all the holidays, the little things fall between the cracks. That was certainly the case with updating this blog — the holidays took over and seemed to extend past 1/1, spilling almost all the way to Tax Day. (Party on.) But now I’m back with a few quick updates.
Writing
For clients:
I’ve just contracted with a content marketing agency to write blog posts about orthopedics and physical rehab. I’m also working with a new ghostwriting client on an op-ed we plan to submit to top magazines and newspapers. And a quick turnaround job has come my way this week, writing a press release about an educational app.
For myself:
In early February, I was accepted to a free, limited-enrollment fiction workshop at Chapman University. The semester-long class meets weekly and is taught by Richard Bausch, editor of the Norton Anthology of Short Fiction. (Remember those books from high school English?) I’m loving having a network of writers and a regular fiction-related appointment on the calendar. I’ve also joined a small writing circle that meets weekly.
For the past two weeks, I’ve been adapting one of my short stories to a short film script. A filmmaker friend and I are hoping to get the project submitted for a production grant within (gulp) a matter of days.
Plus the AWP convention is here in Los Angeles this week. I’ll be there for half a day to volunteer at a professional association booth. I’m also hoping to drop by to meet the editor of the HYSTERIA poetry anthology, in which I have a poem. HYSTERIA will be published in May. (Click here to pre-order.)
Editing
Nothing right now; possible projects on the horizon.
Reading
My fellow workshop members’ short stories; a big pile of magazines; and some literary journals. Over the weekend I stumbled upon a Little Free Library with free back issues of The Indiana Review and The Missouri Review. Score!
